Oddworld Soulstorm launches PS Plus service to “destroy” game sales!

Oddworld Soulstorm was released for PlayStation Plus at the time of its launch in April 2021, and although that move helped it reach a huge fan base, it was "devastating" for sales of the game, according to the development team's recent statements.

Lorne Lanning, founder of the Oddworld Inhabitants team, explained that the game has been downloaded nearly four million times through PlayStation Plus, a number far greater than the studio's expectations of 50,000 to 100,000 downloads.

During a talk on the Xbox Expansion Pass podcast, the developer explained:

There's nothing malicious on Sony's part about that deal, but circumstances made it a double-edged sword.

We've been having a number of issues with debt and finding talent, and you know, the industry is developing rapidly, big companies are making fortunes, the most we can sell is less than the money we're going to get from the company, we might sell 50,000 units at launch, maybe 100,000 units. . The sales numbers will be very limited anyway since there won't be many PS5s on the market.

Lanning believes that the studio has lost significant profits due to the unexpected popularity of the title on Sony's subscription service, which has naturally led to diminishing potential sales of the title. He continued:

Since it came out in April, it's the highest downloaded game on PS5, and I think it's close to four million units or something, and it's all free copies of a PS Plus subscription, so it was devastating for us.
